Dr. Elena García

Elena García is a roboticist at the Institute of Industrial Automation - CSIC. She received the B.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in 1996 and 2002respectively. She has been a visiting student at the MIT Leg Laboratory in 1998 and at the Laboratoire d’Automatique de Grenoble in 2001. She is a Tenured Scientist as a member of the Automatic Control Department, a research group that since 1990 is concentrated on the design and control of legged robots.

Dr. Elena García has participated in various research projects on field and service legged robots like ROWER, a walking platform for ship building, SILO4, a four legged locomotion system used as a testbed in most of her work, and DYLEMA, a project aimed at using walking robots for antipersonnel mine detection and location. At the present time, Dr. Elena García is involved in a new research line aimed at improving legged locomotion by means of designing new actuators based on smart materials and hybrid technologies.

Her research topics include:
  • Dynamic modelling of walking robots.
  • Friction in high-geared robotic systems.
  • On-line generation of high-speed foot trajectories.
  • Stability of walking robots.
  • Gait adaptation to environmental disturbances
  • Active compliance in walking robots.
  • Robot navigation with complete coverage of unstructured environments.
  • New actuators for field and service robots.
